Air Purifier? I have an air purifier that covers a 12'X14' room, and I recently moved so the room is bigger now. If I were to buy the exact same one could I put the 2 in the same room and would they be able to cover the bigger room together? keif_1 replied: "Yes"

I don't remember what brand it was, because that was more than 13 years ago, but it was just from Kmart. It was quiet and worked quite well, as it had a filter that needed to be washed out weekly i was able to see all the yuk that it had collected." What air purifier is best for keeping a small room dust-free? Also what can i use to clean a dusty room? I am moving into my frat house in a few days and my roomate says the room is covered in thick dust, i need to buy an air purifier but i dont know which is best, i am looking to spend under $125. Also i need to know if there is any cleaning supplies or things i can use on the carpeting which is very dusty and dirty. Also the mattress in the room is dusty. dimpelmum replied: "If you can find little duster wipes called Spontex, this will cut the dust problem by more than half these little duster´s stop the dust from settling back onto your furniture. You can also use a damp cloth to wipe your furniture, The more polish you add the more dust you will collect. Air purifiers are very good , not sure which is the best one, I live in Spain so My suggestion would be off no help to you ,it would be a good idea to buy a mall vacuum, this will help also. But try look for the Spontex wipes , you won´t be sorry you bought them"
cats whiskers replied: "first, give everything a good vacuum including the mattress, then wipe all the surfaces down with a damp cloth (put 1 spoonful of vinegar in the water). spray polish onto a duster and go over it all again, damp dust once a week and that should keep it dust free. if you can afford it rent a steam cleaner for the carpet, or buy a carpet shampoo and either use a hand shampooer or a big sponge and work it in, vacuum off when dry. I don't know about an air purifier, can you not just open a window? hope this has been of some help."
pebblespro replied: "Chances are if you are in college you have a Walmart near you... Get some microfiber cloths.. You can find them in the automotive section for 12 for $4.. They are great at removing dust/dirt w/o using chemicals.... ! Just wet or use dry and it will trap dust/dirt and they are reuseable... Just don't use with dryer sheets or liquid fabric softner... Get yourself a vacuum and do your best to vacuum the carpet and your mattress..If I were you I would also get at Walmart a mattress cover that zips all the way around the mattress to provide a barrier between you/mattress.. God only know's what's happened there ! Ditto for your pillows... ! If you don't have a regular vacuum for about $50 get yourself a shop vac.. It works really well for furniture and it does have carpeting attachments and you can use it on your car as well.. It's cheap, masculine and good for wet spills as well as dry ! I have a CRAFTMAN 6 GAl. with attachements it's medium sized and I use it to vacuum my furniture ! It can be put in a closet as well ! Hi, the brand is AMCOR. I have taken apart the machine and cleaned everything possible. There is one general filter that I have replaced with a new general filter. The next layer is the “forever” filter that need not be cleaned. Running the machine with everything taken apart, I have found out the sound is caused by the running of the motor. The model is outdated so it is not listed on AMCOR’s site.

beamer replied: "your air purifier should run all the time. But if its making alot of noise it may need to be cleaned. Is there a manual that came with it? Look to see if there are any filters that need to be replaced - number one cause of air purifiers making noise they have been clooged up. Some now have "forever" filters that can simply be rinsed off once in a while is it a permanent filter? If so , it should state that. Go to the manufacturer web site too, they will have specifics on it or an 800 number to call.

When my kids moved out they took theirs with them, so that is the same model I purchased again. If you are looking for something for the bedroom, the make a Junior model. That is what I put in my kids rooms.
I like Austin because they last and last and last. You only have to change the filters every 5 years. One of my units is over 10 years old. The plastic junk like Honeywell just doesn't work as well or last.

Will humidifiers do the same as air purifiers? Rebel replied: "It could be that your vents are dirty.. if you have central air or heating.. that would just keep blowing in the dirt..so make sure to vacuum in them or call in a professional cleaning..

cgminime replied: "Only in that the dust that the air the purifier takes in will be trapped in the filter . . . Check your furnace filter (your furnace runs all summer if you have central air). Change your furnace filter every month (I put the date on the edge of the filter in permanent marker and on a piece of masking tape on the outside of the furnace to remind me the last time I changed it). If you buy the cheap ninety nine cent filters, a lot of the dust will go THRU the filter and out your air vents."
stevetower replied: "Humidifiers will help but not as well as a good furnace filter. Have a pro install a media filter, it is a big filter, about 3 inches thick that will remove more dust, especially if you let the fan run and will last much longer than standard 1 inch filters and pass the airflow much more easily."

There is no way to eliminate today's sorrowful environment! You will still have to dust, to no avail. Consumer Reports magazine has some good articles on the particulars ." Will installing an air purifier reduce the amount of vacuuming needed? I have two cats and some feather duvets. My doors and windows are almost always open. The house seems to be covered in dust, even after I vacuum. Cat fur and feathers fragments from the duvet cover surfaces right away. I really hate vacuuming, so I don't do it as much as I should. I even bought a roomba so that it could clean while I was at work, but I don't use it much because I still have to set up the room to be roomba-ed.
If I buy an air purifier, will it help make the house less dusty and furry and feathery between vacuuming sessions? Or does it just remove fine dust particles, pollutants, and pollens? Lance replied: "It will reduce the amount of dust (fine airborne particulates) that settles on furniture etc., however I don't think it's going to help with the heavier stuff such as cat hair and the like."

Mark W replied: "If you don't keep the dust and dander off the floor, it will get in the air and make an unhealthy situation in the house. Keep in mind your pets are closer to the ground and they will be worse off than you. The air purifier will remove some of this from the air, but it now will need cleaning much more often. You will have two chores to do instead of one.
Better to find a reason to make yourself do the vacuuming, or hire someone to do it. Example, your longterm health, less likelihood to get alergies, increased health for your pets. Then you can get the air cleaner to improve the quality of air beyond the particle size that your vacuum picks up - if that is of interest. Don't buy a tool for the wrong purpose, you will be disappointed with both results."
Zane S replied: "I just had one installed and I think Id rather use the reg kind, in each room but Ive been fighting sinus problems so I dont want to run anything but air condition. You should really look into it because they are not cheap and some dont wok that great. I also suggest using swifter wipes and mops and quick vac and use a good vac. Have you ever checked your air ducts that really helped me and use those lint rollars for pet hair and brush and wash your cats hair, Use good filter on HVAC,good luck!"

i do hvac work for a living, and these really do work. they will almost eliminate the need to dust, but you will still have to vacuum to get rid of the hair.
i put on in for a lady who had several cats, and asmah. it really helped her out a bunch.....she even gave me a $20 tip a few weeks later.

oscarschic replied: "I have a Sharper Image 'Ionic Breeze' at home. My youngest suffers from chronic allergies & we have cats - so it does seem to help. We also have a HEPA filter in our furnace/central air unit to keep dust down, and have the ducts cleaned once every year or two.
Personally, I don't think I could rely solely on just the purifier unit - as it has limited capability."
Jesi replied: "There are two basic types of air purifiers. One draws in air through a series of filters with one of the filters being HEPA which filters out all except the smallest of particles. The other units passing themselves off as air purifiers are units that ionize the air and cause the charged particles to bond with oppositely charged particles and they become too heavy to be suspended in the air and precipitate out. Many of the ionizing units also generate ozone. Ozone, which providing that fresh, after a storm smell, is a hazardous air pollutant. For many people an air purifying unit that generates ozone can actually create respiratory problems, such as asthma.
Children, the elderly, pets and those with respiratory problems should not be exposed to ozone generating air purifiers. The advantage the ionizing/ozone generating units have over HEPA units is the costs of maintenance (replacing filters) and the noise, to be effective HEPA purifiers need to pull large quantities of air through the filters.
As an aside, no matter which type of purifier you have you should always run the filter between 16 and 24 hours a day for optimal benefit. With ozone generating units, if they are in the bedroom keep a door open and turn them off when sleeping."

The way to evaluate an air purifer is how often it turns over the air in an hour and what filtering system it has. The best air purifers can be found in allergy relief stores. You can find them online too.
That's how we got ours. The really good ones aren't cheap. Ours was $350, turns over the air in a VERY large room 4 times an hour, and has not only a high quality hepa filter, but also 11 pounds of charcoal that it pulls the air through. It's the top of the line, but it really depends on how serious your need is...ours was pretty serious."
evlbny65 replied: "The negative aspects of an "ionic" air purifier completely outweigh any possible benefits. They discharge excess amounts of ozone, which can damage your lungs. They also don't really work that well.
Your best best for an air purifier is a HEPA air cleaner. This will require you to change filters, but it is overall healthier." |
